Before we begin to learn about adverbs, let us first revise verbs.
What are verbs?
Words that tell us what someone is doing are called verbs.
For example: eat, sleep, write, dance, walk, run, etc.
What are Adverbs?
Adverbs, are words that tell us more about verbs.
They tell us more about how, when, where, and how frequently something occurs.
How to find the adverb?
1. The dog is barking loudly.
To find the adverb we first find the verb. The verb in the above sentence is – barking.
Now we ask the questions How, Where, When, Why, How often.
Here we can ask the question – How is the dog barking?
We get the answer – loudly
So the adverb is loudly, because it is telling us how the action of barking was performed.
2. The girl is sitting down.
The verb is – sitting. And we ask the question – Where is the girl sitting?
We get the answer – down.
Therefore the adverb is down, because it is telling us where the action of sitting is performed.
3. You can have the apple now.
The verb is – have.
Here we ask the question – When can you have the apple?
We get the answer – now
Therefore the adverb is now, because it is telling us when the action of having the apple is performed.
4. She was crying because she was hungry.
Here the verb is – crying
And to find the adverb we ask the question – Why is she crying?
We get the answer – because
So, the adverb in this sentence is – because, as it tells us the reason why the action of crying was performed.
5. Rob plays in the park everyday.
The verb in the above sentence is – plays
Here we ask the question – how often does Rob play in the park?
We get the answer – everyday
So, the adverb in the given sentence is – everyday, because is telling us how often the action of playing is performed.
We learnt that adverbs tell us more out verbs.
That is, the tell us –
When the action happened.
How the action happened.
Where the action happened
Why the action happened.
How often the action happened.

In this blog post, we will explore five engaging exercises to help Grade 1 students understand and use adverbs effectively.
Activity 1: Adverb Charades
Materials Needed: Adverb flashcards, small whiteboard or chalkboard.
Instructions:
Prepare a set of flashcards with adverbs written on them (e.g., quickly, quietly, happily).
Divide the class into two teams.
One student from each team selects a flashcard without showing it to their team.
The selected student then acts out the adverb’s meaning without speaking, and their team tries to guess the adverb.

Materials Needed: Adverb cards with adverbs written on one set and corresponding sentences on another set.
Instructions:
Create two sets of cards: one with adverbs written on them and another with sentences that include adverbs.
Shuffle the cards and place them face down.
Grade 1 students take turns flipping over one card from each set, trying to match the adverb with the sentence that uses it correctly.
Keep track of the number of correct matches for each student.
Activity 4: Adverb Story Building

Instructions:

Have them choose an adverb flashcard.
