Singular and Plural Nouns for Grade 1

Nouns can be said to be in the Singular or Plural number:

  • Singular: The noun that means one person, one place or one thing is said to be in the singular number.

one flower                                              one bird                                                       one bottle

It is a flower.                                          It is a bird.                                                   It is a bottle.

Plural: The noun that means more than one person, place or thing is said to be in the plural number.

many flowers                                            many birds                                               many bottles

These are flowers.                                  These are birds.                                        These are bottles.

Rules for changing the nouns from singular to plural:

1. To change the nouns from singular to plural we normally add s at the end of the word.

For example:  girl – girls, pen – pens, ball – balls.

2. Nouns that end with s, ss, sh, ch and x can be made plural by adding es.

For example:  bus – buses, glass – glasses, dish-dishes, match-matches.

3. Nouns that end with the letter y, can be made plural by changing y to ies to make it plural.

For example:  baby – babies, cherry – cherries, lady – ladies.

4. When the noun has a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) before it ends with the letter y, then just add s to it to make it plural.

For example:  key – keys, boy – boys, tray – trays

5. When a noun ends with o, then es is added to it to make it plural.

For Example: mango – mangoes

6. When a noun ends with f or fe, then f or fe is changed into v and es is added.

For Example: leaf – leaves, knife – knives.

7. There are some nouns that end with f or fe, but we only add s to make it plural.

For Example: roof – roofs, chief – chiefs

8. There are a few nouns which form their plurals by changing the inside vowel to make them plural.

For Example: man – men, tooth – teeth.

9. Few nouns take en at the end to form its plural.

For Example: ox – oxen, child – children

10. Some nouns remain the same in their plural form.

For Example: deer – deer, sheep – sheep
